Malaria map for journalists reporting in dangerous area

Health and safety is one of the main concerns in HEST. However, when people talk about HEST, they frequently focus morevon the safety part than the health section. Indeed, a ambush is more impressive than a moskito bite! However, in fact your are more likely to get attacked by a moskito than a terrorist, and the conwequences can be even more dangerous.

Thus, in HEST you will learn how to react to an ambush because it's crucial to know how to beahave in such a situation. But at the same time, you need to be aware of every kind of strengths that you can face in dangerous area. And malaria is one of these strengths.

This is the reason we foster you to have a look on this website created by the Health Protection Scotland. You will access a very complete world map of each region where you can face a malaria risk. To access the map click here

By the way, we are proud to mention that the HEST course of September is already full. The next one will take place in April, we will keep you informed on the precise date later on.

The next step of HEST: Safety and Security Roadshow

I was discussing the other day with a HEST participant who had recently gone through the training course. She told me that learning how to behave in dangerous situation was essential for her, especially the first aid principles. But at the same time she was afraid of forgetting this knowledge over the time.

And she asked me:

"Why don't you set up a training course dedicated to former HEST participants to refresh their memory about what they learned?"

After a few seconds of reflexion, I replied:
"Well... the funny thing is that we already have something that fits with your request!"

At that moment I realized that the "Safety Training Roadshow" had at some points a lack of recognition among HEST participants, even though the course could be very valuable for them!

Let me present to you in a few words what is the Security and Safety Roadshow:

Derived from the EBU HEST course, the Security and Safety Roadshow is 2 full days training course designed for teams of journalist from the same company.

Contrary to HEST which is an open-enrolment course, the Security and Safety Roadshow is organised on the broadcast company on premises and at its best time convenience

One of the most valuable outcomes of the course is that, as a Manager or Editor-in-chief, you get a better understanding of the safety issues and how to assess a hostile environment. And as a Reporter, you receive informed advice and get a realistic insight into the most common issues in safety and security in non-standard environments.

This course is especially relevant for companies that had already sent people from their Newsroom and want to refresh their knowledge.

Others companies potentially interested are those who want to form their employees not one by one, but all in the same time.

I hope that this article helped the Security and Safety Roadshow to be more recognized!

Interview of HEST co-founder and trainer : Charlie McGrath

Interviewing Charlie is a wonderful experience. Indeed, while whith some people you need to ask lots of questions before getting to the point of the interview, Charlie gives you a straight-forward answer. It's certainly due to his impressive military bacground or maybe his teaching skills, but I have to admit that it was really pleasant to interview him.

I hope you will enjoy this interview as much as I did in making it with Mr. McGrath.
